Labor Day weekend means more DUI patrols on Louisiana roads

As Labor Day nears, most of us find ourselves planning family vacations, taking road trips or just preparing for a relaxing three-day weekend. This holiday, after all, is the unofficial end of summer.

If you plan on celebrating Labor Day weekend with a few drinks, you should know that the roads will be under much higher scrutiny than normal. Law enforcement agencies throughout Louisiana are currently participating in the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. The two-week effort, which ends on September 1, is aimed at increasing public safety by cracking down on drunk driving.

In a recent press release, the executive director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission explained that "the long Labor Day weekend is often high in crash deaths and injuries. Some people see this holiday as the unofficial end of summer and a reason to celebrate--much too often by drinking and driving."

According to news sources, traffic accidents generally tend to be higher during Labor Day Weekend. During the 2013 holiday, for instance, there were 334 crashes on Louisiana roads that resulted in 558 injuries and 11 deaths. Approximately seven of those deaths were attributed to drunk-driving accidents.

In spite of the increased DUI enforcement, you can still have a fun time this weekend. If you plan on drinking, the best way to keep yourself safe (legally and physically) is to find a designated driver or take a cab. It's also a good idea to eat along with drinking alcoholic beverages and to pace yourself. If you have any doubts about your sobriety, please err on the side of caution.

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend!
