Louisiana drunk driving suspect visits police station before arrest

A cornerstone of the American criminal justice system is the principle that each of us is to be considered innocent until proven guilty. This is important because it places the burden of proof squarely on the shoulders of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors. It is not up to an individual to prove that he did not commit a crime. It is up to the state to prove that he did.

That being said, some alleged criminals make the burden of proof a little too easy, as the case of one Louisiana man shows. According to news sources, the man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after driving himself to the police station to fill out an accident report.

The 31-year-old man reportedly called Louisiana State Police in the middle of the night and said he had been involved in a hit-and-run crash in Baton Rouge. It is unclear if he was the victim or was admitting to being the hit-and-run driver. In either case, he was advised to come in and fill out a report.

He came to the station at about 3:45 a.m. driving a Chevy that was not the vehicle involved in the crash. It didn’t take long for an officer to suspect that the man had been drinking. After failing some field sobriety tests, he was arrested. He eventually admitted that he had been drinking prior to the crash and was driving despite having a suspended license.

It’s no secret that alcohol often impairs a person’s judgment. As such, some slip-ups are understandable. Nonetheless, there is only so much a criminal defense attorney can do to help when suspects seemingly give police more than enough evidence to convict them.

No matter what crime you may be suspected of, your first call should not be to a police station. Most of the time, your first call should be to an experienced criminal defense attorney.
