Not a clutch performance: Would-be carjacker can't drive a stick

There are many nuances to criminal law in Louisiana. However, some people who are charged with crimes make it difficult on themselves to emerge from the situation based on their behavior at the time of their arrest -- and the news coverage thereof.

One man from Scott may find this to be true. Police in Lafayette say that the man attempted to steal a woman's car recently. He allegedly pulled the woman out of the car from behind the wheel. However, the alleged carjacker ran into a problem he had not anticipated: the vehicle had a manual transmission, which the 18-year-old man did not know how to operate.

As a result, the man told the woman to get back into the car and drive for him. However, she declined; the man, having few other options, ran away. He was apprehended by officers shortly thereafter.

Now, the young man is facing charges of attempted simple kidnapping, attempted carjacking, possession of marijuana and resisting an officer. He could face severe penalties if he is convicted.

Of course, just like anyone in Louisiana who is charged with a crime, the man is entitled to a fair trial. The suspect's youth and inexperience might be points in his favor, but he may choose to have someone defend himself rather than attempt to do it himself. Experienced criminal defense attorneys may be able to mitigate the seriousness of criminal charges, particularly if an attempt at a caper goes as wrongly as this one apparently did.
