Teacher arrested for DWI after being sent home from school

As we have mentioned frequently on our blog, law enforcement officials in Louisiana do not take cases of suspected DWI lightly. One recent case of alleged drunk driving made headlines recently because the woman involved had been sent home from her job as a teacher earlier in the day.

It wasn't immediately clear if the woman had been dismissed for the day from her Ascension  Parish school because officials there suspected she had been drinking; however, her arrest on multiple charges took place shortly thereafter. Officials said that the woman was involved at an accident after she left the school at an intersection; before police could arrive, however, the woman allegedly drove away.

The driver of the car that had been hit was still on the phone with local police, however, and followed the woman, who drove to a nearby park. The woman apparently realized that she had been followed to the park by the other driver, and attempted to again drive away, police said; however, at that point, officers arrived at the scene.

The woman was booked on hit-and-run charges as well as second-offense DWI. She had been arrested for drunk driving in June as well, which led to the second-offense charge.

It would seem that the woman has an uphill battle ahead of her. A police spokesman was quoted as saying that the woman was extremely intoxicated. In spite of this, however, this person and anyone in a similar situation is entitled to a fair trial and hearing of the evidence. Criminal defense attorneys can work with clients to help them understand what they might face in a trial, should it come to that.
