Ignition interlock device may be required after DWI convictions

It goes without saying that being convicted of drunk driving in Louisiana carries serious negative consequences. Aside from the expense associated with a conviction, the state keeps a close eye on those who have been convicted of drunk driving. In many cases, this involves the requirement for installing an ignition interlock device in one's vehicle.

For our Louisiana readers unfamiliar with the device, an ignition interlock system is installed in a vehicle and requires that the driver blow into a tube before the vehicle can be started. The system then verifies that the driver has not been drinking alcohol. In theory, this prevents people who have been drinking from operating a motor vehicle -- at least, their own motor vehicle.

In many states, including Louisiana, it is a requirement for many drivers who have been convicted of drunk driving to install an ignition interlock device and use it for a certain period of time. The state permits only a certain number of companies to install the devices; the driver must then get a lease agreement and installation invoice to prove to the state that a device has indeed been installed. This is done at the driver's expense.

While this is a cumbersome and expensive process, it may be the only way someone who has been convicted of DWI is able to regain driving privileges. It goes without saying that it's better to avoid a drunk driving conviction altogether. An experienced criminal defense attorney can aid someone who is facing charges of DWI or other crimes.
