Ex-traffic court employee accused of embezzling almost $700,000

The temptation can be great, for those in positions of financial authority at a business, to dip into the company coffers. While some people find that they are not susceptible to this kind of temptation, for others, it can be a real problem. Addictions such as gambling can be fueled with large amounts of money not ordinarily available to people.

A former traffic court employee in New Orleans stands accused of doing just that. Officials say he embezzled nearly $700,000 as a city employee by overbilling New Orleans on invoices. According to the charges, on six different occasions, the man allegedly overbilled the city for hundreds of thousands of dollars in nonexistent charges.

It turns out that embezzlement may not be the only white collar crime for which the former employee is targeted. Officials say that the alleged embezzlement also amounted to money laundering because of how the funds were used. According to the charges, the man spent more than $80,000 for a down payment on a luxury car and also spent more than $20,000 buying casino chips at a local casino. Under federal law, this could be construed as money laundering.

As with any sort of criminal charges, the man will receive his day in court. A conviction is not guaranteed by any means. He may have his work cut out for him, however, because of the nature of the alleged crimes. Many financial transactions leave behind a trail of paperwork. Someone facing this situation will often want to have an experienced white collar crimes defense attorney on his side.
