Ex-motel owner pleads guilty to tax fraud charges

Louisiana residents who run afoul of the Internal Revenue Service need to mount a strong defense if they hope to emerge relatively unscathed. One former motel owner might serve as a cautionary tale; he recently admitted in a New Orleans court that he didn't report about $1.4 million in income over a three-year period.

The conclusion of the tax fraud case ends a saga that began in 2010, when local officials seized two motels owned by the man and his wife and arrested them. The motels, which officials said were used for prostitution and illegal drug use, were eventually razed.

In court, the man admitted he owed the government more than $100,000 in unpaid taxes. In one year, he reported on his tax return that he lost nearly $40,000; however, investigators said he actually had positive income of more than $400,000. As a result of the guilty plea, the man could face a three-year prison sentence and a fine of a quarter of a million dollars.

The man and his wife still are facing a state trial on several counts, including theft, tax charges and filing false public records. This could lead to even more prison time or fines upon a conviction.

White collar crimes are aggressively prosecuted in Louisiana. People who think they are likely to be the subject of prosecution for crimes such as tax fraud, embezzlement, insider trading or other corporate crime may wish to consult with a criminal defense attorney in order to mount a strong defense against the charges.
