Woman tells police she made up story about man shooting her

When police respond to the scene of an alleged crime, in many cases, their eyes often tell them much of what they need to know. Recently, a woman in Washington, Louisiana, told police that a man had arrived at her home with the intent of stealing her boyfriend's car, and during the course of the theft attempt, he shot her. Police arrested the man and charged him with two counts of attempted murder -- one because he allegedly fired through the car window at the woman's boyfriend, and once because he allegedly shot her.

However, as it turns out, there was more to the story than met the eye. The woman came forward to police this week and said that the alleged assailant did not shoot her after all. Rather, the gunshot wound she sustained was inflicted by herself.

Police say the woman told them that she saw a man trying to steal her boyfriend's car and decided to come to his aid. She brought a gun from the home, and during the ensuing chaos, accidentally shot herself in the foot. When police responded to the incident, she told them that the alleged carjacker had shot her.

She says she didn't tell police the truth because she was afraid that such an admission would get her boyfriend in trouble, because it was his gun. As a result of what she told police, the woman was arrested and officials charged her with filing a false police report.

Initial information in a criminal case can be incomplete, misleading or simply incorrect. A criminal defense attorney can help someone charged with a crime to cut through the clutter and help concoct a defense strategy.
