Police treating death of Baton Rouge man, 43, as a homicide

A 43-year-old man was fatally shot in Baton Rouge on Thursday morning. Police are treating the incident as a homicide.

The man had evidently been bicycling and was found in the front yard of a residence in the 6200 block of Ford Street around 9 a.m. Neighbors reported hearing at least one gunshot-like noise around 8 a.m.

There is no apparent motive for the shooting. The man’s bicycle was found a short distance from his body, which suggest that stealing the bicycle was not the reason for the apparent murder. At this point, it does not seem there was any connection between the man and those who lived in the residence where authorities found his body.

Police have not released much information on the apparent murder, likely because their investigation is in its early stages.

Instances of violence like this are always a shock to our community, as well they should be. Louisianans have a low tolerance for violence, and one incident like this is one too many. We extend our most sincere condolences to the deceased man’s loved ones.

That being said, fear and a desire for vengeance should not be used as a reason to unduly rush the process of searching for justice. Uncovering the truth and holding the appropriate party responsible can sometimes be a long process. Naturally, we hope that this sad incident is resolved with all expediency, but not at the cost of proper procedure or observance of legal rights. It is very important that we follow the right protocols very strictly.
