False bomb threat at Evangeline Downs could get Carencro man 20 years in prison

In the wake of events as tragic as the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, people often behave strangely. It is a quirk of human psychology; when something as hard to confront as the bombings happens, some people act in ways they wouldn't have before.

We wonder if this facet of human behavior is to blame for an unusual incident at Evangeline Downs Casino Tuesday night. That is where and when a 43-year-old Carencro man was arrested after allegedly telling casino employees that he had planted a bomb somewhere in the building.

Although it turned out to be a completely false alarm, authorities understandably responded to it with great seriousness. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Explosive Detection Division, Opelousas Police Department, Louisiana State Police and Opelousas Fire Department all responded to the casino.

The man was arrested and booked in St. Landry Parish Jail. Making a bomb threat can result in a felony charge that could result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Now, falsely claiming that you have planted a bomb is not at all a smart, fair or safe thing to do. Because all of those law enforcement agencies responded, it resulted in a waste of public resources, and it is unkind - to say the very least - to make people worry that their lives are in danger.

Even recognizing those things, we think it would be wise to learn more about the man who made the claim. It is possible that he was very disturbed by the Boston bombings and was acting out in an odd manner, or perhaps he is struggling with a mental condition.
