In one week, four Lafayette women's vehicles stolen

A carjacking at weapon-point Saturday made it the fourth time in a week that a Lafayette woman has had her vehicle stolen under the apparent threat of violence.

The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday when a man approached a woman getting into her vehicle, appeared to indicate that he was armed and demanded the woman's keys, phone and purse.

The man took off with the vehicle, which was later recovered around the intersection of Cameron and University Streets. No one was injured in the carjacking.

Authorities think there might be a link between that incident and a carjacking on Thursday morning. In that incident, a man armed with a gun approached a woman in the 2000 block of Johnston Street just before noon. He demanded her keys and took her vehicle, which was recovered about half an hour later.

Carjackings last Monday and Wednesday bear some similarities to these two carjackings, but at present, authorities do not think the same person committed them.

If any extensive damage was done to any of the vehicles that were stolen, that has not been reported in coverage of the carjackings.

No one ever asks to be a victim of a crime, but there are things you can do to protect yourself. Having at least one other person walk you to your vehicle, even if it is daylight, is a good idea. You should also try to make sure that someone knows your plans and knows when to expect you back.
