A last-minute New Year's Eve reminder not to over-drink and drive

Since it's New Year's Eve, we hope all of our Lafayette readers had a good 2012 and we wish you all the best for 2013.

New Year's Eve, as you may know, is one of the largest party days of the year. Without a doubt, many of us will be having a drink or two as "Auld Lang Syne" starts, so we thought it would be prudent to take a moment and encourage everyone to be careful and drink in moderation.

Last year, 60 people were killed on Louisiana highways on New Year's Eve. About 40 of those fatal crashes involved alcohol.

If even one person dies because of an alcohol-related crash, that is one person too many. We all owe it to one another to be careful and to not drink and drive.

That being said, we understand that people make mistakes. One of the consequences of having too much to drink is that your judgment is impaired, and that can mean you think you're okay to drive when you're not.

If you do make a one-time error in judgment (which we know from experience is what a drunk-driving incident is for many people), please understand that help is available to you. In many cases, it can seem like a drunk-driving arrest is the start of a chain of events you cannot control, but that is not the case. With the assistance of an experienced and knowledgeable attorney, you may be surprised at what can be accomplished.
