Lafayette man charged with manslaughter in connection with Deepwater Horizon disaster

A Lafayette man is one of two BP employees who have been indicted on manslaughter charges in connection with the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

As you might have heard, BP recently agreed to accept criminal liability in connection with the disaster and will pay $4.5 billion in fines. That's the largest-ever fine levied by the U.S. Justice Department.

The 65-year-old Lafayette man and his coworker, a 65-year-old resident Reno, Nevada, man, were supervisors aboard the Deepwater Horizon. They were the highest-ranking BP employees on the job when the explosion happened. Allegedly, the men should have noticed abnormal high-pressure readings that would have indicated a disaster was imminent.

Each man now faces 11 felony counts of involuntary manslaughter, 11 felony counts of seaman's manslaughter and one violation of the Clean Water Act. The manslaughter charges stem from the deaths of 11 workers aboard the oil rig.

Lawyers for the Lafayette man said these two supervisors are being used as scapegoats and that the charges against them do not amount to justice.

The men are likely to be arraigned Nov. 28 in a New Orleans federal court.

No one would deny that the Deepwater Horizon incident was a truly awful disaster. However, some people portray it as an event that had many causes and was the result of a pattern of behavior, not the sort of thing that was directly attributable to the actions or inactions of two people.

Which of those theories best describes the way you look at what happened?
