Two robberies reported in Lafayette

Yesterday, a private individual and a business in Lafayette reported that they had been robbed under threat of violence in separate incidents.

No one was injured in either robbery, which is very fortunate, and the Lafayette Police Department has not reported taking anyone into custody with either of the reported robberies.

In one incident, the victim was walking down the 100 block of Delahoussaye Drive around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victim reported to police that the suspect got out of a "newer Toyota 4-door", brandished a knife at the victim and demanded money. The victim gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money and the suspect left the scene in the Toyota.

In another incident, the O'Reilly Automotive Parts store in the 1000 block of North University Avenue reported that a man entered the business, also around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and brandished a pistol at two victims. The suspect then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register before fleeing.

Once again, the police do not think that the incidents are connected.

Criminal law experts will tell you it simply is not possible to prevent every instance of criminal activity. After all, all it takes to is one person to make a poor decision and that goal has already been made impossible. That being said, communities can band together through programs like neighborhood watches and take a stand against crime.

And while taking a stand against criminal activity is good, we still need to remember that a person who is accused of a crime is just that - "accused," not "convicted." It would be good if all communities, including Lafayette, could work together to discourage crime while still respecting and observing the rights of those accused of committing crimes.
