St. Martinville man dies in drunk-driving crash

It is not always clear to people why authorities take drunk driving allegations so seriously. After all, every single one of us is human -- we make mistakes. It is so easy to have one more drink than you should. Certainly, law enforcement officers and court officials should be able to understand that, shouldn't they?

It isn't that judges, prosecutors and police officers do not realize that we all slip up from time to time. It's that they also realize that drunk driving can be very dangerous and they have to keep the public's welfare in mind.

For an example of the kind of harm drunk driving can cause, let's take a look at a recent drunk-driving incident from Beaux Bridge.

The accident happened Saturday when a 26-year-old St. Martinville man was heading north on Louisiana Highway 347. His vehicle left the road and crashed into a culvert. As a result of the accident, his passenger, a 32-year-old St. Martinville man, was ejected from the vehicle. When emergency crews arrived, they pronounced the passenger dead at the scene.

It is believed that the driver was drunk at the time of the accident. He has now been charged with vehicular negligent injury, vehicular homicide, not wearing a seatbelt, careless operation and DWI.

Now, these charges do not mean this man is a bad person. They do not mean he is necessarily careless or insensitive in all areas of his life. However, if he was drunk when this accident happened, then it is true that he made a terrible mistake -- a mistake that cost his passenger his life.

Our office really works to make sure that the charges facing anyone accused of drunk driving are fair and just and that they don't come to impair an accused person's life and future if there was a fatal flaw in the arresting process. If you would like to know more about the way we work to assist people charged with drunk driving, you might find a visit to the Drunk Driving page of our website to be informative.
