Sheriff's deputies shoot Westwego man three times in alleged drug sting

A Westwego man was shot Friday night by Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies after he crashed his vehicle into a patrol car, allegedly on purpose. The Sheriff's deputies had been pursuing the man because they had gotten a tip that he was involved with drugs.

The 27-year-old man was shot three times and remains hospitalized. There has been no update as to his present condition and authorities have not specified where he was shot. One deputy suffered a minor leg injury during the incident.

The Sheriff's Department said it had received a tip that the man would arrive at a certain location at a designated time bearing crack cocaine. To prepare for his arrival, deputies parked their squad cars around the parking lot where the man was expected to appear.

When the man pulled up, the deputies turned their vehicle lights on an approached him. That's when they say he started ramming his car into their vehicles in an attempt to escape.

It has not been revealed whether the man did, in fact, have crack cocaine on him at the time. Authorities have not yet announced any charges in connection with the incident. They have, however, said that the man was on probation for a previous narcotics offense.

Even if this man was trying to sell crack cocaine (and please note that is an "if" because we do not know for sure whether he was), we hope he recovers. Suffering three gunshot wounds is not an easy setback from which to recuperate.
