After arrests in Calcasieu Parish, two face DWI charges

A man and a woman were arrested in separate incidents in Calcasieu Parish over the weekend. They have both been charged with DWI. In an unusual coincidence, it is the fourth DWI charge for each of them.

In one incident, a 39-year-old Beaumont, Texas, man was pulled over Saturday after an officer allegedly saw him swerving as he drove. The officer reportedly observed that the man was having difficulty standing and smelled of alcohol. Supposedly, the man failed a field sobriety test and then also failed a blood-alcohol content test. This man has three previous DWI convictions on his record, the most recent of which occurred in 2009 in St. Martin Parish.

In the second incident, a 47-year-old woman was arrested Saturday morning after her car went off the road and into a ditch. (Her city of residence is not known). The officer who responded to the scene said she was slurring her speech and thought he could smell alcohol on her breath. The officer claims that the woman then failed field sobriety tests and a blood-alcohol content test. She has also three prior DWI convictions, though the dates and locations of the occasions on which she was arrested are not known.

Here in Louisiana, authorities don't handle drunk drivers with velvet gloves and the propensity to be harsh certainly increases with every drunk driving conviction. Both of these people would benefit from a vigorous and carefully planned defense so they can ensure that their rights are observed in court.

On a more personal note, someone who has three DWI convictions and stands accused of a fourth seems to have a problem with responsible alcohol use. For some people, substance abuse poses a real problem and can be very difficult to overcome. For both their sakes and the sake of the public, we hope these people are able to find a successful treatment option and overcome their personal issues with regard to alcohol use.
